URA Tournament Baseball
URA Baseball also offers tournament team opportunities for players seeking a more competitive type of baseball program for ages 6 and up.
These teams are competitively selected and play multiple scrimmages and tournaments from May through July. A full schedule could include an additional 30+ games, and may include tournaments at the Cal Ripken stadium complex in Aberdeen, MD.
Our tournament teams compete in districts (usually at the end of June), and if they finish in the top 2, they move onto the state tournament in July.
Our teams are very competitive, and each year we hjave several that advance to the state tournament. Each age group features an “A” division, and a B division if there is enough interest.
Who is eligible for the tournament teams?
Anyone who signs up for and plays at least 50% of the games during the recreational season is eligible to be selected for the tournament team.
How are the teams selected?
During the course of the season, kids are evalauted by their own and opposing coaches. At the beginning of May, the tounament coaches meet wtih the age group Commissioner and the recreational coaches to vote on the top 12 players to be selected for the tournament team. Considerations for selection include but are not limited to:
- Baseball skills- hitting, fielding, pitching, base-running
- Baseball acumen- knowledge of the game and rules
- Commitment and ability to make the majority of tournaments- we need kids who will commit to the majority of games between May and the end of July. Specifically kids should be available for the district and potentially state tournament.
If necessary, we also hold a one day evaluation of all kids who are interested in playing. After that evaluation, selections are made and invitations issued.
Each team usually carries 12 players on the roster.
If your child is interested in playing tournament baseball, please be sure to let your coach know.
How is tournament baseball different from recreational baseball?
Tournament baseball is different then the regular URA recreation season. The team will be selected and it is coaches’ discretion of putting kids in best positions to help the team. Players may be asked to play same position throughout the season and there is no minimum inning requirement to play infield. Players that participate on the “A” tournament team are expected to make the baseball team their first priority and are expected to attend practices, scrimmages, and games.
How is the tournament team funded?
The tournament team is 100% funded by team families. Families will have to pay additional fees that cover uniforms, umpires for scrimmages, and cost of tournaments.
