URA Recreational Baseball (Divisions/ Age Groups)

Our youth baseball program includes ages 5-12, and features multiple divisions geared toward the age and development of your child.

Pee-Wee:  Generally for children ages 5-6.  Younger kids are eligible with parental consent.

This division plays their games on Sunday only with a practice during the week.

At this age we utilize a pitching machine set at a slower speed.  The machine use helps develop hitting and maximizes success for all our players by providing that consistently placed ball.  We do not have strikeouts as if a player is struggling to make contact with the machine pitch, a tee is brought out to help the player put the ball in play.

Rookie division:  For kids 7-8 (generally first and second graders).

Kids learn to pitch in this division, and the games generally feature 3 innings of kid pitch and 3 innings of hitting off a pitching machine.  We begin implementing steals, with limited steals per inning.

This division generally plays two games per week- one during the weekday and the other on Saturday.  There is usually one practice per week.

Minors division:  For kids 9-10 (generally third and fourth graders).

The minors’ division introduces steals of home, and is full time kid pitch.

This division generally plays two games per week- one during the weekday and the other on Saturday.  There is usually one practice per week.

Majors division: For 11-12 year olds play who will play on a 50/70 field.

These kids will learn to play with leadoffs, but also can be picked off by savvy pitchers with good moves.  Steals are unlimited.

This division generally plays two games per week- one during the weekday and the other on Saturday.  There is usually one practice per week.

Competitive and fun play

Our commissioners make every attempt to balance the teams in terms of skill set, which creates both a fun and competitive environment, with every team “in the hunt” for playoffs.  Each division (except Rookie B) ends with playoffs (usually double elimination) and a crowned division champion.

How do I know which division my child should be in?

May 1 is the the cutoff date for ages in Cal Ripken Baseball.  A player's age for eligibility in our leagues is determined by what age they are prior to May 1.

Examples:  So a player who is 8 in January when he signs up, and has a birthday in April will play in the 9 year old division.  A player who is 8 with a birthday May 15, would play in the 8 year old division.
